Mirafi TenCate Geosynthetics

TenCate Geosynthetics Americas is headquartered in Pendergrass, Georgia, Northeast of Atlanta, Georgia. We are the world’s leading provider of geosynthetics and industrial fabrics. Through the processing of synthetic raw materials, we develop, manufacture, and provide innovative and reliable industrial textiles that enhance the performance of our customers’ products.

Our application knowledge is vast in the markets we serve (from transportation construction, site development, aquaculture, and agriculture, to name a few) as we continue to set the standard for geosynthetic and industrial fabrics uses.

Demand for geosynthetics and industrial fabrics is growing. Nature is unpredictable, harsh, and even devastating. Landforms shift, rain falls, and ice forms, causing environmental havoc. We are an innovative, problem-solving provider focused on delivering solutions. TenCate Geosynthetics North America is a company dedicated to creating tangible value for our customers and consistently prepared to exceed expectations.

Innovation and Technology

Knowledge, experience, and innovation…three key components to being a global leader. At TenCate Geosynthetics Americas, our philosophy is if you can imagine it, we can design it. We are a pioneer in the research and development of geosynthetic products and solutions.TenCate Geosynthetics Americas provide engineered solutions to problems involving the stabilization of landforms and many other challenges. Each geosynthetic material we produce fulfills a specific function for its application need. We pride ourselves on our materials being environmentally friendly, easy to install, extremely durable, and able to withstand the most harsh forces of nature.Customers from continent to continent are recognizing the importance of geosynthetics. Demand for environmentally friendly cost-effective and efficient products is increasing. TenCate Geosynthetics has met this challenge directly by providing economic solutions to problems that in the past were solved by more drastic and expensive methods.

We pride ourselves on being the world leader in engineered geosynthetic products and product system solutions specific to our customers’ needs. These products and solutions are highly durable, cost effective and efficient, and conducive to the environment through the reduction of extraction and depletion of sands and aggregate.

 Drainage and Filtration

TenCate Mirafi® geosynthetics deliver solutions that enhance drainage and filtration in landfill and waste containment applications.

Mirafi Nonwoven Geotextile Fabrics

Roadway Reinforcement

TenCate Mirafi geosynthetics enhance the performance and the design life of roadway and railway construction structures such as roads, railways, airfields, and earthworks. For these applications, a TenCate Mirafi geosynthetic is installed as separation and filter layers in areas where groundwater is a problem. TenCate Mirafi geosynthetics offer the ideal characteristics of robust mechanical properties coupled with high water flow capabilities.

TenCate and Mirafi History

Our story begins in 1953, when a catastrophic flood struck the coast of Holland. This tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, was hard hit, suffering widespread devastation. Nearly 2,000 people lost their lives. Determined not to allow a recurrence of this type of disaster, the resourceful Dutch began developing a new generation of dike.

Working in concert, Dutch engineers and master craftsmen sought out materials that would withstand the most severe and erosive forces of water. Their search for innovative new products led them to Nicolon B.V. of Holland. Here, they discovered an advanced line of tough industrial textiles which they used to reinforce and retain the dike soils. Recognizing that the demand for such industrial products extended far beyond the Dutch coast, Nicolon Corporation, a Division of Royal Ten Cate (USA) Inc. was established in Cornelia, Georgia, in 1980.

Meanwhile, in Charlotte, North Carolina, a line of experimental fabrics had been developed in the late 1960s using innovative fabric technology. The fabric, formed of “MIRAcle FIbers”, was aptly named, Mirafi® geosynthetics. Mirafi®, Inc. became known as “the company that started an industry.”

In 1991, Nicolon Corporation and Mirafi®, Inc. joined forces and is now known as TenCateTM Geosynthetics. TenCateTM continues to devote its research, development, manufacturing and marketing expertise to designing products that provide soil reinforcement, sedimentation control, erosion control, filtration, and drainage. TenCateTM distributes globally, and is backed with 300 years proven experience. TenCateTM continues to provide innovative value-added products and knowledge to the construction, agricultural, recreational, and other niche markets with geosynthetic products which exceed our customers’ expectations. TenCateTM is ISO 9001:2000 certified.

Mirafi geosynthetics are a specific, engineered response to a specific problem: how to enable landforms to withstand the most severe and erosive forces of nature. Through engineering and research that span more than 50 years, TenCateTM Geosynthetics has created the most diverse line of geosynthetic fabrics available from any single source on the planet—and has applied them throughout the world to significantly reduce the “hidden” cost of earthen support systems: their frequency of maintenance and repair over a period of years. Moreover, geosynthetics are increasingly becoming an economical solution to problems that otherwise could only be solved through drastic, expensive methods.

• Geosynthetics are engineered specifically as a cost effective solution for geotechnical and hydraulic applications.

• Geosynthetics are easy to install.

• Because they are composed of highly durable polymers, geosynthetics are effective in permanent civil structures.

• Since they reduce the extraction and depletion of sands and aggregates, geosynthetics are environmentally friendly.

At TenCateTM Geosynthetics, we believe that this proven technology is endowing the age-old relationship between man and nature with a new dimension of compatibility.

Buy American

Did you know … Geosynthetics used on projects funded by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), i.e. “the stimulus bill”, could be subject to Buy American requirements? TenCate Geosynthetics is the global leader in geosynthetics, offering Mirafi products manufactured in America.  There are two provisions of ARRA that have Buy American requirements under certain conditions. Section 1605 requires funds made available for construction, alteration maintenance, and repair of public building or public work, use “MANUFACTURED GOODS” produced in the United States. The second provision of the ARRA that has a Buy American clause is Section 604 which makes funds available to the Department of Homeland Security.

The interpretation may be left to the agency receiving the funds, but monitored by the appropriate federal agency. For example, in the case of transportation funding, the state agency would incorporate the Buy American language (law) into all RFQ or bids for projects funded by the ARRA. The transportation related ARRA funding is monitored through FHWA division offices in each state. Those offices are the principal point of contact in terms of making sure that the ARRA projects meet the Buy America provisions in the legislation. Additional guidance can be found at:
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/economicrecovery/guidance.htm. There is a section regarding the Buy America provisions as it relates to FHWA. The Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) believes that the term “MANUFACTURED GOODS” includes geosynthetic materials. As such, these materials must be produced in the United States.
