Background

The New World Trade Center Transportation Hub is just one of five new buildings which will make up the improved vision of downtown New York. Sustainable commercial space, convenient transportation, and a destination cultural center are all attributes which have been balanced gracefully within the new rebuild of the World Trade Center to symbolize the resilience and renaissance of not only New York – but of the entire country. This vision also unites an unprecedented merging of architects, artists, and urban developers, including Santiago Calatrava, David Childs, Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, Fumihiko Maki, and Richard Rogers. The singular goal is a grand new urban center for 21st century New York, and promises to become the most recognizable site in New York. Even esteemed projects such as these buildings are not without their hurdles. Located in lower Manhattan, two blocks from the Hudson River, the buildings are in a flood zone. The 9A Underpass and North Extension commuter passages, were experiencing what many below-grade concrete structures face – water infiltration. Leaking concrete cracks, damp areas and water penetration through joints were becoming increasingly hazardous to this area used by hundreds of thousands of commuters every day, due to its location adjacent to the new Freedom Tower. Many products were applied to attempt to mitigate the water damage. The problems were found to have been caused by failed external sheet membranes, and due to blind side application, they were impossible to access in or to replace or repair. Injection systems were attempted to address the leaking cracks and persistent damp areas, with results proving only temporary, while costing thousands of dollars in additional labour.

Solution

Greg Maugeri and Billy Della Sorte of Dry Concrete personally assessed the problems the passages were facing. Through countless early morning site visits, the Dry Concrete team performed trials and provided support and technical expertise. As long time Kryton distributors, Dry Concrete has a strong familiarity with the Krystol Cracks Repair System, and through their experience, could confidently recommend it as a permanent solution to the leakage problems. After demonstrating the performance of the products on a wall of one of the passageways, the project’s decision makers agreed with Dry Concrete’s recommendation. The Krystol Crack Repair System was the only concrete repair solution that was able to stop the leaks and return the problem areas to a dry state. Approved by both the Downtown Design Partnership (DDP), and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PATHNYNJ), the Krystol Crack Repair System went to work, effectively sealing the leaking cracks, while providing permanent protection against high ground water pressure. The proprietary chemicals used in the Krystol products will only get more effective at preventing water penetration over time. These chemicals lie dormant throughout the life of the concrete structure, reacting with any present moisture to create hair like, permanent crystals which stop any water from entering the structure.

Racing Mowers, Massacring Trees with Chainsaws and Stuffing Faces at the Gamka Sales Husqvarna NJLCA Open House July 14th, 2011

Edison, NJ, July 25, 2011— A large group of landscapers, arborists, tree and snow removal service companies, nurseries, members of the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association, property managers and contractors involved in grounds keeping converged at Gamka Sales Company’s World Headquarters in Edison, NJ on July 14th to eat, meet and compete all evening.

The Open House was sponsored by Husqvarna. Their full line of equipment for landscapers, tree surgeons and snow removal services was on display as well as Wacker Neuson’s wheel loader, excavator and dumper machinery. It was a night to demo products and most of those who attended were seen kicking tires, revving engines, and trying out the machines on hand. Gamka’s showroom was packed with items and their 60,000 sq. ft. warehouse was wide open for the Special 5 Cent Guided Tours conducted by Gamka staff. Many visitors had not been aware that besides Husqvarna, Gamka distributes other products used by landscapers including compaction equipment, filter and stabilization fabrics, diamond saw blades, trench drain and over 40,000 other line items. Gamka has a complete service and repair department with 12,000 parts on hand for the products it sells and Gamka rents 1,700 pieces of construction equipment.

The gathering included a business meeting for the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association but the usual agenda of greeting, eating, meeting and hearing the topic of the day was scrambled when the big barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers came out and people decided that the two contests to test the skills of operators was going to be really fun and first up. The meeting part would wait. For the groundskeepers, there was the Husqvarna Zero-Turn Lawn Mower Timed Obstacle Course Challenge. The participants with the fastest course times were awarded trophies with the champion racer winning a “Green”, one person transportation unit, AKA a Trek Model 820 21 speed mountain bicycle. That lucky contestant was NJLCA member Eric Jepsen of Wayne Jepson Landscaping in Raritan, NJ. For the arborists, tree surgeons and anyone else wanting to give it a shot, there was the Husqvarna Chainsaw Tree Massacre Competition. Using a chainsaw, contestants had to take two slices off a log as quickly as possible. The one with the fastest time of all was NJLCA member Steve Smorong of Dobra Property Maintenance in Colonia. He won a brand new Husqvarna chainsaw.

The outdoor event ran late but the race track and chainsaw logging areas were lit up like daylight with light towers supplied from Gamka’s rental fleet.

When all the contestants had completed their tries for the gold, a brief NJLCA meeting was opened for New Jersey Landscaper Contractor Association business, a concise seminar on the “Evils of Ethanol”, followed by presentation of the awards and door prizes.

By the end of the night everyone admitted to being stuffed with food, all left with some kind of a souvenir or prize and attendees agreed it was a night they would remember.

The Great Gamka Wacker Neuson Ride-on Concrete Trowel Challenge, November 3, 2010

The allure of beer, brats and the competitive nature of members of the concrete industry brought a large crowd to Gamka Sales Company’s World Headquarters in Edison, NJ in the afternoon of November 3rd, 2010 for the Great Gamka Wacker Neuson Concrete Trowel Challenge. The big draw was to see and hear the grand prize custom Wacker Neuson ride-on trowel to be awarded at the World of Concrete in Las Vegas next February. The CRT48-35VX is loaded with chrome and sports straight pipes, loud enough at 125 dB(A) to make most Harley Davidson motorcycle riders envious. So…what is the Concrete Trowel Challenge? The Concrete Trowel Challenge began as a simple contest between friends one year at World of Concrete. They used the demo concrete slab poured in Wacker Neuson’s outdoor booth in Las Vegas at World of Concrete and maneuvered a ride-on concrete trowel through an obstacle course to see who was the fastest finisher. The fastest operator to scoot through the obstacle course will be crowned the fastest finisher, winning the customized trowel.

At Gamka World HQ there was a good mix of contractors, concrete finishers, labor representatives and contractor association administrators in the group, all of whom were there to get a “taste” of this prequel to the Las Vegas grand finale.

 

Attendees walked though a gauntlet of Wacker Neuson equipment on display in the yard and right by the outdoor barbecue with the broiling brats, especially imported for the occasion from Wisconsin. Inside the warehouse there was more equipment to see and a long table laden with the fixin’s for the brats, beer and beverages. More Wacker Neuson small equipment was on display near the registration table where everyone who signed in received a custom Wacker Neuson Concrete Trowel Challenge tee-shirt, hat, free entry to the 2011 World of Concrete and a chance to scope out the trophy table for the top finishers in the timed obstacle course.

 

The actual Challenge was run in the six bay indoor truck loading area. Contenders were below the spectators who had a bird’s eye view of each contestant as he or she raced against the time clock.

 

As each rider mounted his concrete trowel, they would nail the throttle and jam the sticks forward as the judge shouted, “Go!”. The racers were required to go around the rectangular course first and then do a double U-turn inside before rounding the back half. A one second penalty was added to their score for every traffic cone touched or wall scraped. The look of concentration on the contestant’s faces was clear to all as the sparks flew off the trowel blades spinning at well over 100 RPM. At the conclusion of each run the rider’s elapsed time was entered into a computer to be projected on a big screen along with the name and company affiliation of each participant. As each score was entered the screen would be updated by rank. All this enhanced the rivalry among the Challengers and the spectators saw numerous reruns by operators who want to have their best time posted. Shortly after 7:00 pm the last man finished his run and the winners were announced. In first place was Joe DaSilva of A-Tech Concrete with an incredible timed run of just 28.5 seconds. As Top Gun, Joe was awarded a gift card to TGIF. In a very tight second place was Andrezy Niedzialek of AJS Masonry with a score of 28.68 seconds, so close! In third place was David DaSilva of A-Tech and also Joe’s brother, with a time of 29.16 seconds. Andrezy, David and eight more participants all received Gamka 2010 Concrete Trowel Challenge trophies. All who ran the obstacle course got a Wacker Demo Truck mini-model as a memento of the spectacle and their part in the race against the clock. Every attendee got their fill of hot brats, beverages, noise and excitement.

 

It was a cool November day but the action was hot. Look for a repeat next year!

An old Caterpillar salesman once told me you get infected, “I got yellow paint in my veins,” he said, “and it don’t come out.”

We are in a cyclical economy. The money in the construction pipeline keeps us going after other industries slow and shut and we start up later because the money to get going again takes awhile to flow back. Still, we go through this every 7 to 9 years. Boom, bust, boom, bust.

 

This bust is a big one and most of us, those of us who are still in the game, have diversified to get more of what little there is out there. Gamka has always specialized in concrete applications. Until recently. As you have noticed (we certainly did), there are not a lot of concrete slabs being poured or anything else. We became the Wacker Neuson distributor of Compact Class wheel loaders, Mini-excavators and Dumpers for most of New Jersey. Why? Different markets, different work, more opportunity. We did the same for the line of Husqvarna landscape, tree and snow removal products. Was this original? No. The survival instinct in us all took over. You, our contractor customers, have been doing the same, bidding different work, working other territories.

 

The economy sucks, to be blunt, but we have been here before and will be again. “All” it takes is hanging on, hanging in, tightening the belt and doing what it takes, whatever that is.

 

So this blog is part of diversifying. Gamka has joined the Social Media Revolution. You have too or you would not be reading this. We are in FaceBook, LinkedIn and, God help us, we Tweet. It is all part of reaching out. Now we blog.

Edison, NJ, April 14, 2011— Gamka Sales Company was recently named as the Husqvarna Group’s newest New Jersey Distributor. The Husqvarna Group is the world’s largest producer of outdoor power products including chainsaws, trimmers, lawn mowers and garden tractors. Gamka is a family owned and operated distributor of light to medium sized construction equipment, building products and supplies. Rentals of the equipment lines Gamka sells and services account for a large portion of the revenue mix. Centrally located in Edison, New Jersey, Gamka World Headquarters is just off Interstate 287 between exits 2 and 3.
